Reel Islington Film Festival 2012

Turner Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller and multi-award winning director Ken Loach will headline a packed programme of screenings and events at this year’s Reel Islington Film Festival from 24-26 February. Alongside internationally recognised figures from the arts, the three-day independent film festival also offers a platform for first-time filmmakers.

The festival is being produced by Reel Islington in partnership with Holloway Neighbourhood Group and Rowan Arts.

Battle of Orgreave

Followed by a discussion with artist Jeremy Deller and Jeremy Corbyn MP

Date: Sunday 26th February 2012, 7 pm – 10 pm.
Venue: Platform, 260 Hornsey Road, N4 7QT

Screening of ‘The Battle of Orgreave’, a film directed by Oscar-nominated Mike Figgis. The film follows Jeremy Deller’s extraordinary re-enactment of the violent miner’s strike in 1984. Deller will take time out from preparations on his first major retrospective at the Hayward Gallery to join Jeremy Corbyn MP for a discussion directly after the screening.

A wide selection of shorts exploring the theme of heritage, including the 1974 Martin Scorsese film Italianamerican and award winning documentary Hackney Lullabies directed by Kyoko Miyake.

An afternoon of one hour workshops hosted by film industry professionals giving members of the public a chance for a behind the scenes look at the film making industry. Hosts include Channel 4 Promotion Director Kate Dunn,  Digital Effects Specialist John Cryer and Film Critic from the Telegraph Tim Robey.

The Great Dictator

The first all-talking feature length film from the king of visual comedy, Charlie Chaplin. A Jewish barber takes the place of a power hungry dictator in this satirical wartime comedy.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley

Followed by Q&A with director Ken Loach.

This drama set during the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War tells the story of two brothers who join the fight against British rule. The film received rave reviews for being “breathtakingly authentic”, as well as winning the Palme d’Or Best Picture at the Cannes Film Festival 2006. (127 minutes)

Leaving Baghdad is a road movie that follows the journey of Sadik, the personal cameraman to the leader Saddam Hussein at the end of the nineties. The film follows Sadik as he tries to escape the grip of the regime and reunite with his estranged wife in London.
