Winner of the BAFTA for Best British Film in 1960, Sapphire (1959) sees the investigations into the mysterious murder of a young female student reveal a world of racism and bigotry. The Black Safari

Sunday 24th February 2013, 6 – 7.40pm
Mildmay Community Centre, Woodville Road, N16 8NA

‘Have you ever been discovered…white men were always discovering us…it is time we in turn explore the land of the white man…’
Three black men and one black woman set out on a voyage of exploration along the Leeds-Liverpool canal in a boat called the Queen of Spades, casting their ‘gaze’ over the local population, cultures and customs as they encounter them. Black Safari presents its viewers with a view of english-ness and England filtered through the eyes of fictional Africans – the botanist, the anthropologist, the navigator and recorder, and the leader – a device that exposes some of the structures and tools that define and support how we think about, see others and behave towards them. (95 mins, Cert PG)
Zak Ové will be introducing the film and answering questions after the screening.
