‘Il Divo’ (2008) Dir. Paulo Sorrentino
Sorrentino’s biographical drama, based on the life of Italy’s seven-time Prime Minister, Giulio Andreotti, was awarded the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2008. Andreotti was leader of the notionally centrist Christian Democrat party in post-Mussolini Italy. Sorrentino’s lens reveals him as the silent spider at the centre of a vast conspiratorial web of shady deals.
