‘Young Soul Rebels (1991), Dir. Isaac Julien, 105 mins (18)
The year is 1977, and while some are busy getting ready to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee, others have more important things on their minds. Youth subcultures clash; Punks, Teds, Soulboys and Skinheads, and there is fighting in the streets as the National Front loom ever-larger. In the clubs, the story is retold as young people enjoy their music, drinking and dancing, and lovemaking is made without prejudice. Young Soul Rebels was awarded the Semaine de la critique prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1991.
Part of the Islington Exhibits 2014 programme.
